“Music is prophecy. Its styles and economic organization are ahead of the rest of society because it explores, much faster than material reality can, the entire range of possibilities in a given code. It makes audible the new world that will gradually become visible, that will impose itself and regulate the order of things; it is not only the image of things, but the transcending of the everyday, the herald of the future.” (Jacques Attali, Noise: The Political Economy of Music)

The Prophetic Sound brought together artists and academics whose subject of focus is noise in creative practice. The Prophetic Sound proposes a future post-digital era in which everything with a microchip has malfunctioned, as a thought exercise and starting point for response through sound.

Artists from across the UK were invited to think about locations where pattern, timbre, pitch, organisation, sequence of sounds become distinguishable from noise and to consider, through diversion within such locations, new origins for future communication systems.

  1. uncomfortable, challenging – I had to struggle with tourettes of disapproving inner dialogue, which added to the noise… just the sort of chaos in order we all need from time to time
